Bashur (Iraqi Kurdistan)

The autonomous Kurdish region, officially recognized since 1992. Governed by the KRG with its own parliament and military.

Major Cities:

  • Duhok - Mountain gateway
  • Halabja - Symbol of resilience

Geography:

Zagros Mountains, Tigris River, fertile plains. Cold winters, hot summers. Li başur, zivistan sar e (In the south, winter is cold)

Bakur (Turkish Kurdistan)

The northern region encompassing southeastern Turkey, rich in ancient Kurdish heritage and traditional villages.

Major Areas:

  • Diyarbakir (Amed) - Historic walled city
  • Van - Lake Van region
  • Mardin - Ancient hilltop architecture

Culture:

Dengbêj tradition, carpet weaving, Kurdish-Persian bilingualism. Bakur welatê dengbêjan e (North is land of bards)

Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan)

Western region known for democratic confederalism and multi-ethnic governance.

Key Areas:

  • Qamishli - Largest Kurdish city
  • Afrin - Olive groves
  • Kobani - Symbol of resistance

Governance:

Direct democracy through communes, gender equality, ecological sustainability. Rojava, roja nû (Rojava, new day)

Rojhilat (Iranian Kurdistan)

Eastern region rich in Persian-Kurdish cultural fusion and literary heritage.

Cities:

  • Sanandaj - Cultural capital
  • Kermanshah - Trading hub

Zagros Mountains

Kabab Koobideh: Grilled minced meat with local spices (black pepper, sumac, cumin).
Nanê Kurdî: Flatbread baked in tanûr (clay oven). Nanê germ, jiyanê germ (Warm bread, warm life)
Sharbat: Pomegranate, berry, or almond drinks.
Kleicha: Date or nut-filled pastries for celebrations.

History of كوردستان

Ancient Civilizations (3000-500 BCE)

Mitanni Kingdom, Medes, Assyrian influence. Zagros bridge between Mesopotamia and Iran.

Civakên kevin, bingehên me (Ancient civilizations, our foundations) The Hurrian-speaking Mitanni kingdom (1500-1300 BCE) established early Kurdish political identity.

Medieval Era (800-1300 CE) - Salah al-Din

Kurdish emirates rise. Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi (1137-1193) - Kurdish hero who recaptured Jerusalem.

Selahaddin, serkeftina me (Salah al-Din, our victory) Born in Tikrit, his Ayyubid dynasty (1171-1250) united Egypt, Syria, and Kurdistan. Known for chivalry and justice.

Key Achievements: Recaptured Jerusalem (1187), defeated Crusaders at Hattin, built Citadel of Cairo.

Ottoman-Persian (1500-1900)

Kurdish principalities (Bitlis, Botan, Bahdinan, Soran) maintained autonomy.

Emaret, serxwebûna me (Emirates, our independence) This period saw codification of Kurdish customs (Yazidi, tribal law) and development of literature.

Modern Era (1900-Present)

Republic of Mahabad (1946), KRG autonomy (1992), Rojava revolution (2012).

Têkoşîn, navê me ye (Struggle is our name) From Qazi Muhammad's short-lived republic to modern autonomous regions, the Kurdish journey continues.
